Australia's Prime Minister has described Sunday's mass shooting as an act of pure evil, anti-semitism and terrorism. 15 people were killed after two men opened fire, in a park at Sydney's Bondi Beach. Authorities say two attackers, a father and son, targeted the Jewish community during Hanukkah celebrations. Vigils are now being held as authorities investigate. The Australian government’s renewed push to tighten gun laws must not come at the exclusion of broader social reforms, a gun violence expert has told Al Jazeera. Australia introduced some of the world’s strictest gun laws after a shooter killed 35 people in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur in 1996. Since then, politicians across the political spectrum have embraced “quite inflammatory and divisive rhetoric”, Samara McPhedran, a principal research fellow at Griffith University, told Al Jazeera.
