While there was no clear winner in the war between Hezbollah and Israel, “Israel had the upper hand in this conflict”, according to Hassan Barari, professor of international affairs at Qatar University. “On the ground, there is no clear winner, but I think Israel has achieved more in the 14 months,” Barari told Al Jazeera. He explained that Hezbollah did not achieve its goal of ending the war in Gaza, while Israel did not achieve its goal of eradicating Hezbollah. However, Israel killed many fighters from the Lebanese group, including its top leadership, while some 60 Israeli soldiers were killed since the ground operation began, said Barari. The ceasefire may have occurred due to US pressure, the professor said. “We know that the Israeli air force has been through some difficulties in terms of ammunition and supply and Biden has actually suspended some of these shipments. So one thing is the American pressure on Lebanon,” he said. “And there is also a realisation in the American administration side that Lebanon is different from Israel, as it has no territorial claim as [is] the case in Gaza.” If the war in Gaza comes to an end, the ceasefire is likely to hold – but that is unlikely to happen any time soon due to Netanyahu’s domestic concerns, the professor said. “But [on] the Lebanese front … whether [the ceasefire is] going to hold or not is the implementation of the clauses. There are 13 clauses in the deal,” he added.
