Iran has been accused of attempting to strike Diego Garcia, a joint US-UK military base in the Indian Ocean, in what would be its longest-range missile attack to date. The island is located roughly 4,000 kilometres from Iran. Though the UK says the attack was unsuccessful and Iran has denied responsibility, the incident has raised questions about the potential reach of Iranian missiles, including whether they could target sites in Western Europe or key NATO installations such as Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Iran possesses several longer-range weapons, including the Khorramshahr ballistic missile and the Soumar cruise missile, with estimated ranges of 2,000 to 3,000 kilometres.
