In Benin, at least 14 people have been arrested after the armed forces thwarted a coup attempt. The move comes after soldiers appeared on state television announcing the removal of President Patrice Talon, the closure of borders and the suspension of political parties. Government officials later said the army was regaining control. Talon, 67, who was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2021, is due to step down at the end of his second term next year, the maximum allowed by the constitution.
