The M23 armed group’s reported withdrawal from the eastern Congolese city of Uvira has raised questions about accountability, foreign influence and the true drivers of the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kambale Musavuli, an analyst at the Center for Research on the Congo–Kinshasa, says the group’s presence and exit were driven by pressure from US mediators rather than demands from the Congolese government.
