Education secretary defends ending tax exemption on private schools

The education secretary has insisted that adding VAT to private school fees - which comes into effect next week - will not force huge numbers of pupils into the state sector. And writing in today's newspapers, Bridget Phillipson said tax exemptions on private schools were a "luxury we cannot afford". She said the changes had the support of middle-class parents who had already been "priced out" of private education. Labour says the money raised will be invested in state schools.
