The father of Elle Edwards, who was shot and killed on Christmas Eve in 2022, says plans to free the killer's accomplice early makes a "mockery" of the justice system. 26-year-old Elle was murdered when she was caught in the crossfire of a gangland feud outside a pub in Wirral. Two years on, her father Tim has been told the man who helped hide a gun after the murder is due to be released early because of prison overcrowding. The Ministry of Justice wrote to Mr Edwards, saying Thomas Waring could be freed as early as April 2026, fifteen months sooner than planned. In a letter to Tim, the Prime Minister defended the early release scheme, calling it "difficult but necessary".
