From protest to ballot: Bangladesh votes, but revolutionary ideals face reality check

Abu Sayed, a student protester, was fatally shot by police outside Rangpur University gates on 16 July 2024, sparking mass demonstrations that toppled Bangladesh's government and led to this month's elections. His defiant final stand, broadcast live, became the defining image of the revolution. Whilst his family and fellow protesters hope for justice and systemic change, many express concern that the country's deep-rooted inequality, corruption and nepotism remain largely unaddressed, with the top 1 percent holding a quarter of the nation's wealth.
