The government has just released a 32-page dossier outlining its reforms of the asylum system in full. The lengthy document is topped by a foreword from the prime minister, who begins his contribution by stating that the "world has changed" and it is "our responsibility to renew the application of those values as new challenges arise". Sir Keir Starmer added: "It is more volatile and insecure, with increased conflict leading to a significant increase in the movement of people across the globe. "Our asylum system was not designed to cope with this. Nor were our rules designed for the situation that sees asylum seekers travelling through multiple safe countries before seeking to cross the English Channel by boat." He says this has resulted in "severe strain" not only on the asylum system, but also on the "wider social contract".
