A UN-backed multinational force, led by Kenya, has struggled to restore order in gang-controlled areas of Haiti. Though the mission was intended to deploy 2,500 police officers from six countries, only around 1,000 are currently on the ground. The ongoing violence has severely disrupted healthcare and education services—at least 39 health facilities and more than 900 schools have shut down. Cholera outbreaks are increasing, and sexual and gender-based violence is surging, particularly in displacement sites with inadequate shelter and sanitation. Etienne Cote Paluck, Editor in Chief of Haiti Magazine, told Al Jazeera that international forces have struggled to gain ground due to complex security, political, and logistical challenges.
