Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former IRGC deputy commander and hardline figure, as its new security chief, replacing Ali Larijani who was killed in a US-Israeli strike last week. Zolghadr is part of the close circle around new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, reflecting efforts to harmonise the new leadership team. Unlike his more academic predecessor, Zolghadr is entrenched in military and security roles, suggesting Iran's national security apparatus will become more "militarised and securitised." The shift indicates the war mentality will persist, even as Iranian officials assess the possibility of dialogue with the United States. Al Jazeera's Ali Hashem reports from Tehran, Iran.
