Omer Bartov, an Israeli genocide scholar, says the definition of genocide is whether it can be established that an action was taken to destroy, in part or in whole, the members of a particular group. There are various categories for assessing whether that threshold has been met, including killing members of a group, enforcing conditions of living designed to destroy the group or preventing births in that group. When viewing Israel’s actions in Gaza, many of those conditions have been met, Bartov said. “My understanding of what occurred there since October 7 was that what Israel tried to carry out was ethnic cleansing,” Bartov said. “That failed in part because people could not leave, and as a result of that, it became a genocidal operation,” Bartov added. Bartov added that the genocide is not over and won’t be until Israel faces punishment for its actions.
