In Deir al-Ahmar, a Christian village in Lebanon, thousands of Shia Muslims have sought refuge from Israeli bombing. The displaced families are sheltering in schools, churches and private homes. Israel's forced evacuation order on Baalbek and surrounding areas has led to this influx of people. Some locals reckon Israel is attempting to reignite old hostilities within Lebanon to target Hezbollah. Despite past sectarian tensions, the Christian residents have welcomed their Shia neighbours, emphasising their shared Lebanese identity. The situation has increased activity in Deir al-Ahmar, with many refugees keen to return home, even though their houses may no longer exist due to the ongoing conflict. Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford reports from Deir Al Ahmar, in eastern Lebanon.
