Twelve months ago, few people had heard of Zohran Mamdani. Now the self-proclaimed socialist has been elected mayor of New York City, the heart of the US' financial markets. The Democrat secured more than half of the vote beating the former governor of New York State, Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani was born in Uganda's capital Kampala, his father is an acclaimed Ugandan academic. People there say his election in New York gives them hope. Joseph Beyanga, he's the former head of radio at the Daily Monitor, where Mamdani worked as an intern. He says although Mamdani is from a privileged background he was always concerned about those less fortunate than him.
