The death of Mexico's most wanted cartel leader, Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho", has prompted authorities to deploy 2,500 troops to Jalisco state to prevent a violent succession battle. Oseguera, who led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (JNGC) and had a $15m US bounty on his head, was killed in a military operation after intelligence tracked him to a cabin in western Mexico. His organisation controls drug trafficking routes across all 50 US states and is engaged in territorial conflicts with rival cartels. With Mexico set to co-host the upcoming World Cup and Guadalajara among the host cities, officials are working to maintain stability in the cartel's stronghold.
