New York’s Met Museum reopens the Rockefeller wing with decolonised Global South art showcase

Artists from New Zealand, Mexico, and Senegal gathered in New York to reopen the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renovated Rockefeller Wing. The $70m overhaul at the Met showcases over 1,800 works from the Global South. Curators collaborated with communities, including descendants of featured artists, to honour cultural contexts. Highlights include a reimagined Kwomo house ceiling from Papua New Guinea. The revamp addresses concerns over artefact acquisition with clearer ownership histories. Visitors praised the spiritual depth and thoughtful presentation of the displays. The Met aims to foster global cultural connections in the US’s largest art museum.
