Nuremberg at 80: The trial that changed justice forever

The Nuremberg Trials began 80 years ago, putting surviving Nazi leaders on trial for crimes against humanity. Over ten months, evidence exposed the scale of the Third Reich’s atrocities, leading to executions, prison terms and acquittals. The trials set a precedent for later tribunals on Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, and for the creation of the ICC. Figures such as Radovan Karadzic were later prosecuted and convicted through these mechanisms. Today, the ICC has issued arrest warrants for leaders of Hamas and for Israeli officials, including Benjamin Netanyahu, over actions in and around Gaza. Critics say political pressure and sanctions, notably from the US, have slowed some ICC investigations.
