Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following high-level talks in Doha, pledging to respect each other’s sovereignty. The deal was confirmed by Pakistan’s defence minister and foreign ministry, which emphasised diplomacy and mutual cooperation. The ceasefire brings relief to Afghan truckers stranded at the border for over a week, suffering financial losses. Local traders and residents say the closure had driven up prices of fruit and vegetables, worsening living conditions. Pakistan thanked Qatar and Turkey for mediating the talks that led to the breakthrough. Officials from both nations are set to meet again on October 25 for further negotiations. People on both sides of the border hope the talks will deliver lasting peace and stability. Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder reports from Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan.
