Marwan Barghouti’s son, Arab Barghouti, told Al Jazeera that his father — Palestine’s most popular leader — was beaten unconscious by eight Israeli guards last month, suffering broken ribs. He said the attack was confirmed by five Palestinian detainees released under the ceasefire deal. Arab accused Israel’s national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir of threatening his father’s life, saying he showed him an image of an electric chair during a prison visit. He said the Israeli government has denied international access to his father and is “trying to silence” him through isolation and repeated assaults. Barghouti has reportedly been in solitary confinement for nearly two years and denied family visits for three. Arab said the repeated beatings are an attempt to disable his father politically, calling him a unifying figure for Palestinians. He compared his father’s struggle to Nelson Mandela’s, saying Israel wants to eliminate a credible voice for peace and unity.
