Sudan’s government has officially returned to the capital, Khartoum, for the first time since the war started in 2023. The government had been operating from the Red Sea city of Port Sudan. It's been eight months since the Sudanese army announced it had regained full control of Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has led to what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The governor of Darfur says a joint military operation is being carried out in Darfur and North Kordofan to liberate the regions from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudan's army says the preparations ahead of a possible full-scale launch have already forced the RSF to retreat from border areas.
