Syrian forces enter Qamishli after SDF deal as Kurdish residents voice caution

The Syrian government is reasserting control in northeastern Syria after years of Kurdish-led SDF rule during the civil war. Recent clashes were followed by a ceasefire and an agreement to integrate the SDF into state institutions. Under the deal, Damascus will take control of oil and gas fields and detention centres holding ISIL prisoners. Syrian security forces have entered Hasakah and Qamishli, positioning small convoys in strategic locations. Day-to-day security on the streets remains with the Kurdish Asayish police. Many Kurds remain uncertain about their future, fearing the loss of political and civil rights.
