Sunday's voting is the first of three phases of the general election, which has been heavily criticized by the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Opponents claim that the election is an attempt by the ruling military junta to gain international legitimacy. The vote is further complicated by the fact that the junta doesn't control the entire country. The junta is fighting a civil war that, according to the U.N., has killed over six thousand civilians and displaced millions more.
