The Eaton fire in Altadena started near a nature reserve. Flames spread so rapidly staff at a senior care centre pushed dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds down the street. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, issued a statement on social media saying the state had deployed more than 1,400 firefighters in its attempts to quell the wildfires.
