This year's Emissions Gap Report by the UN says the chances of limiting global warming to 1.5C is “virtually zero”. Signed by 196 countries, The Paris Agreement was set up to limit global warming to below 2C above pre-industrial levels and prevent it from rising beyond 1.5C. However, the report finds that greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 were the highest on record and that the planet is on course for 3.5C of warming this century if countries continue at their current trajectory.
