Thousands of revelers mark start of street carnival in Cologne

Germany’s traditional Women’s Carnival, or Weiberfastnacht, kicked off the street carnival season in Cologne as thousands of revelers flocked to the stronghold to sway, dance, sing and toast together. In western Germany’s Rhineland region, Weiberfastnacht takes place on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday.
