The Conservatives have accused the government of bringing the UK economy "to the brink" and are offering to help Labour by working with them on welfare cuts. Shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately told Sky News Breakfast: "One thing the government has got to do is get spending under control and start the country living within its means. And the place to start is a welfare budget." But the party's record of helping the government to make cost savings was challenged by Sky's Wilfred Frost, who pointed out that the Tories failed to support the government's Welfare Reform Bill before the summer recess.
