At a press briefing at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida on Sunday morning, Donald Trump said the US had severely degraded Iran's leadership and military capabilities, including nuclear and air defence infrastructure. He claimed strikes had set back Iran's nuclear programme, warning Tehran would have obtained a nuclear weapon within weeks without US action. Trump said he has been in direct contact with Iran, stating that Tehran "called" to negotiate after facing the threat of having its largest power plant destroyed, and that conversations have been "very good and productive." He stressed any deal must ensure "no nuclear bomb, no nuclear weapon, not even close to it," and said Iran has agreed to give up enriched uranium. Trump expressed confidence Israel would support a potential agreement, calling it a path to "long-term peace, guaranteed peace" in the Middle East, benefiting Gulf states including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. On oil prices, he said they would "drop like a rock as soon as a deal is done." He suggested the Strait of Hormuz would be "jointly controlled" after the conflict, adding "maybe me" when asked who would control it. Trump described the outcome as "a very serious form of regime change," claiming that many Iranian leaders have been killed, including the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his son Mojtaba, and adding that "everybody's been killed from the regime" and "they're really starting off." He compared a potential outcome to Venezuela, where he said the relationship is "working out well." He confirmed the Pentagon is seeking $200bn in supplemental funding, saying "it's always nice to have" in an "inflamed world." Trump declined to discuss US military deployments in the region, citing operational secrecy. He also criticised former counterterrorism official Joe Kent, who resigned in protest over the war, calling him disloyal after being given a White House job. Overall, he said there is a "real possibility" of a deal, announcing he would postpone strikes on Iranian power plants for five days, though without guarantees.
