Trump’s immigration crackdown creates controversy ahead of 2026 midterms

In 2025, federal troops and immigration agents targeted mainly Democratic-run cities. The administration claims 600,000 deportations by year-end, fewer than Biden’s 850,000 in 2024. Videos show US citizens, pregnant women, and bystanders being chased and detained nationwide. The Supreme Court allowed agents to question people based on ethnicity or jobs, effectively legalising racial profiling. Many arrested had no criminal record, and even some Trump supporters criticised the tactics as performative cruelty.
