UNRWA funding crisis threatens Palestinian refugees’ lifelines in Lebanon

UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, is facing its worst financial crisis, forcing salary cuts and reduced working hours for nearly 3,000 staff in Lebanon. The organisation, which relies on donor funding, expects a shortfall of around $220 million this year. Around 230,000 Palestinian refugees in Lebanon depend on UNRWA for healthcare, education and basic support, as they are barred from many professions and lack political or social rights. The agency's commissioner has accused Israel of conducting a pressure campaign to dismantle UNRWA, which serves up to 6 million Palestinians across the region.
