Yemen's Houthis threaten Red Sea disruption amid Iran-Israel tensions: Explainer

After weeks of threats, Yemen's Houthi movement has entered the war, launching attacks against Israel in support of Iran. The group controls most of northwestern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, and a significant portion of the Red Sea coastline—a vital corridor for global trade. The Houthis are now threatening military action in the Red Sea if the waterway is used for hostile operations by the US and Israel against Iran. The corridor handles roughly 12 to 15 per cent of global trade, and the group has previously demonstrated its capability to strike targets far beyond Yemen, including attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities in 2022 and commercial shipping during Israel's war on Gaza.
