Destruction is seen in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, after nearly three weeks of Israeli strikes on the Hezbollah stronghold. Israel expanded its aerial bombardment of targets in Lebanon, hitting areas both in and outside traditional Hezbollah bastions, as its troops battled militants across the border Sunday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the United Nations on Sunday to move its peacekeepers out of “harm’s way” in southern Lebanon, claiming that Hezbollah militants were using them as “human shields” in the ongoing fighting with Israel. With five peacekeepers injured in three separate incidents since Thursday, the Israeli leader told U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that “it is time that you take” the U.N. forces “out of Hezbollah strongholds and out of the combat areas. Your refusal to evacuate (U.N.) soldiers makes them hostages in the hands of Hezbollah. It endangers them as well as our soldiers.” Iran fired more than 180 ballistic missiles at Israel on Oct. 1 amid an escalation in fighting between Israel and its proxy in Lebanon after an Israeli attack in Beirut killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Almost all the Iranian missiles were intercepted in flight but some penetrated Israeli defenses. The only fatality was a Palestinian killed by debris that fell on the West Bank.
