Vladimir Putin received a red carpet welcome from Donald Trump at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. The two leaders held a private meeting in Trump’s limousine, followed by bilateral talks lasting under three hours—shorter than the initially projected six hours. Despite no ceasefire announcement, both sides claimed the discussions were productive. Putin emphasized his desire to end the war in Ukraine and restore U.S.-Russia relations, including lifting sanctions and resuming air travel. Trump later stated that only Ukrainian President Zelensky can agree to a ceasefire, promising a follow-up meeting soon. The summit appears to mark a diplomatic win for Russia, with future talks hinted at by both leaders. Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reports.
