Israel's army chief says the offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon will be a “prolonged operation”. It has destroyed bridges that cross the Litani River it says are used by Hezbollah. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called this "a dangerous escalation" which is a prelude to a ground invasion. More than a thousand have been killed in Lebanon since the war with Iran began. Ziad Majed, a professor of Middle East Studies, told Al Jazeera that Israel’s offensive in southern Lebanon may cause lasting instability, with mass displacement and infrastructure destruction seen as key tactics.
