But German Chancellor Friedrich Merz insisted the EU should aim for a "quick and simple" deal rather than a "slow and complicated" one. The bloc is facing a July 9th deadline to make an agreement, or see its goods face 50% levies. In addition, EU chief von der Leyen proposed an alternative to the World Trade Organization, citing the hurdles to its trade-dispute mechanism which have prevented the EU from resolving its complaints with the US. Merz suppored the proposal to create an alternative to the WTO.
