President Ahmed al-Sharaa is due to meet Donald Trump at the White House later on Monday, the first official visit by a Syrian leader in nearly 80 years. The meeting is a key step in rebuilding relations between the countries, and a chance for al-Sharaa to press Trump to lift the remaining sanctions against his war-ravaged country.
