The Israeli military has killed Hezbollah's chief of staff, Haytham Ali Tabtabai, in a strike on Beirut, the organisation confirmed tonight. Lebanon's government has condemned the attack, accusing Israel of ignoring a year-long ceasefire, but Israel said it has no choice as it will not allow Hezbollah to rebuild its forces. It is the first Israeli airstrike on Beirut since June and it comes days before Pope Leo is scheduled to visit Lebanon.
